What is Art?

Audio story by Christin Trammell

Both Mackenzie White, 24, and Morgan Layne, 19, use different mediums to express themselves and "speak their mind." White tends to side more with earthy and neutral tones, using acrylic paints and sculpture to show texture, while occasionally adding a pop of color to her work. Layne produces vivid visions with watercolor, along with sketches using ink pens, of creatures you could only imagine in the subconscious. Although they use different styles and products, their pieces convey emotion, release, and house an outlet for creativity. Both White and Layne are independent artists and show insight in this short audio story of what art means to them, society, and how their life would be different without it. Below, a few of their pieces are also featured.

“Typically it’s things that I have difficulty talking about or putting into words. I feel like with most artists, it’s a form of self-expression.”

“I think it’s important that people are allowed to express themselves and find their own way of putting their heart and soul out into something that other people can have.”

“Artists provide a unique perspective, they’re like therapists almost, we like to dig deeper.”

“If I didn’t have art then, I wouldn’t know who I could be. I wouldn’t know my options.”

“I think it’s a good release that kids need to have in school because they are able to learn about themselves and learn about their emotions and express their emotions.”

“I think artists are important because art is everything.”

[SOT]

“When you stop teaching art, you lose history and thousands of years of culture and you prevent new artists and historians from arising.”
